370. Fire Place Screen, ca. 16th/17th Century

Lovely fireplace screen is a ca. 16th Century tapestry in a ca. 17th Century carved frame. The tapestry depicts a biblical scene of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus chapter 17.7 - Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink). The people are dressed in clothing of the period. This scene has a border across the top with an orb in the center with various fruit on either side. At the bottom is a central cartouche flanked by various figures. The slender frame is carved with flowing vines and stands on turned feet. The screen measures apprx 50-1/4"H x 35-1/4"W. Provenance: The current owner purchased the firescreen in the 1950's from the Pirtle estate on Corning Drive in Bratenahl. It was in the living room, which is panelled in restoration style panelling with "Gringling Gibbons" style carvings around the over mantle.
