278. Portrait of a Gentleman, Russia, Late 19th/Early 20th Century

This portrait has a heraldic insignia at upper left, next to a finely dressed man in cape and plumed hat. Verso has two hand written labels and two wax seals. The first label has the inventory number, the word quantity and date. The second tag says that this is the honorable hussar, king on Virtember and that he came to view the lower ranks during...(loss to paper at this point). This is all written in old style Russian and loosely translated in part. The portrait and they style in which it is painted bears a remarkable resemblance to works by Rembrandt. Canvas apprx 21" x 16-3/4". Not framed.
