Beautiful complete bronze seated Thai Buddha. Figure is seated on an unusual base as it peaks up at the corners in almost a stylized Lotus form. The item is not cleaned and features a lovely overall patina. It is most likely from the 18th Century. The small knots seen on the head, generally referred to as curls are actually a helmut of snails that gathered to protect Buddha's head during his meditation. Apprx 20"H X 10-3/4" W, at base.

"L'Amour à L'Arc". Spelter statue. Dynamic figure of an adolescent Cupid ready to draw back his bow. His unfurled wings and twisting contraposto give a sense of energy to this classical subject. Plaque on front of base gives title, artist and school (Ecole des Beaux Arts). Sculpture is signed on base. Spelter sits atop a low red marble, flecked with black and white, pedestal. Two pieces bolted together. Entire item measures apprx 33" H.

Exotic, orientalist sculpture of lovers on the back of an elephant. Sculpture in three parts: the elephant is made of bronze, the amorous couple is carved from pale alabaster and the oval base is of black and green veined marble. Measures apprx 19" H X 15" L.

282. Carl Kauba (Austrian, 1865-1922)


"Jumping Stag". Cold painted bronze, signed on interior of hind quarter. Stag attached to fence at stomach, fence is attached to green marble base. Overall height apprx 7"H x 4-1/2"W x 10-1/4"L. Kauba was born and lived in Vienna, Austria. He never visited America but was inspired by the romantic American West writings of German author Carl May and by photos sent to him by a friend in Ohio, who also sent him Indian artifacts and cowboy related items.

Large, bronze Cupid holds high the "flame of love". Arrows and roses lie at this feet. Behind him, his wings and cloak swirls around. Applied patina. Attached to black marble base. Signature inscribed at base. Cupid stands apprx 20-1/2" H.

"Bronze Clown". Figure of a tall, thin clown. The pensive clown wears a hat and ruffles at his neck, wrists and ankles. He stands 17-1/4" H X 3" W, across shoulders. Signed on back of right leg with signature and date of 1963, also #1. Number in series not known. Bolted onto black wooden base.

287. Bronze Figure of Chung Kuei (circa 20th Century)


This is an image of protective spirit, demon slayer, Shoki, or Chung Kuei as known in China. Figure is hollow due to casting technique and bronze is roughly 1/4" thick. The seated figure wears a diadem of flames and holds his long beard in his hand as he reads, with furred brow, a small scroll that he holds in his hand. He wears a robe decorated with a dragon pattern over a suit of armor. Measures apprx 19-1/2" H.

An abstract figure of a woman in bronze. She has an energetic shape attached to her shoulders perhaps to suggest hair, or wings, or flame. Signed on square base C. Pibu Orth (?), and dated 12-13-76. Measures apprx 6-3/4" H.
