103. Attributed to Michael Wolgemut (German, 1434-1519)
Woodcut, attributed to Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for the Franciscan Stephan Fridolin's "Schatzbehalter oder schrein der waren reichtuemer des hails vnnd ewyger seligkeit" in Nuremberg, Germany. This woodcut is dated circa 1491 and numbered 148 in ink in right upper margin. Verso has a two column page of German text. Paper apprx 11-1/2" x 8-1/4", image apprx 10" x 7".

104. Master I.Z., after Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
"The Circumcision", woodcut on paper, created ca. 1505. The image comes from Durer's series, the Life of Mary as one of her seven sorrows. Note the cloaked figure of Mary standing off to the right and the infant Christ at the center of the composition. Artist monogram in lower right image and artists initials in lower center margin. Image measures apprx 11-1/2" x 8-1/4". During the second half of the 15th century, a group of brilliant engravers known only by their initials emerged in Germany. They are the Masters B.G., B.M., L.G.S., A.G., B.R., and W.H. to name a few.

105. In the Manner of Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
"Saint Christopher", woodcut on laid paper, removed from a collector's album. Christopher was a giant who assisted travelers with crossing a stream. One day he carried a small child across the stream; the child's weight nearly crushed him. When they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world on himself. Christopher's hermit mentor can be seen on the lower right. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Durer's monogram is in a cartouche on the bottom margin. Image is a light impression, image apprx 8-1/4" x 5-3/8", overall paper apprx 9-1/4" x 6-1/4".

108. Master L Engraving (Dutch, circa 16th Century)
Copper plate engraving on laid paper from a collectors album mounted on new paper. Large Fleur de Lis watermark visible. Images is a finely executed depiction of Christ on the Cross at Calvary. The crucifixion occurs in the top left corner, one can recognized the Mary's mourning His death, the Roman soldiers playing lots for his garments, and the instruments of His passion. In the foreground a woman and child sit to remind the viewer of Christ's infancy. Illegible writing is in lower right corner. Impression measures apprx 11-1/4" x 16-5/16", overall paper apprx 11-1/2" x 16-1/2". During the second half of the 15th Century, a group of brilliant engravers known only by their initials emerged in Germany.

111. Johann Wilhelm Baur (German, 1607-1641)
Copperplate engraving on paper. Scene depicts the apparel of two soldier groupings: those from Italy (Italliani) and those from Moscow (Moscouiri). The Moscow soldiers wear fur coats and caps. The Italians are shown with mustaches and wide brimmed hats. "Willaem Baur inuent" on lower left and "F.L.D. Ciartres excud", on lower right, the number 12 is seen on the corner. Original print backed by laid paper and archivally tipped into off-white mat. Image trimmed. Print measures apprx 4" x 8". With mat, entire item measure apprx 14" x 18". Baur was closely influenced by Callot.

"Het veroveren der Stadt Allegona in't eylandt groot Canaria, in der Taere". Steel plate engraving on paper, taken from a book. Van der Gouwen was a Dutch engraver and mapmaker, active in Anvers and Amsterdam. Image depicts preparations for a battle in the Canary Islands. This is a double page engraving (crease down the center). Dated 1598. Impression size apprx 13-1/2" x 11". Overall paper apprx 16" x 12-1/4". Cream colored, chain lined paper with visible watermark.

116. Vincenzo Coronelli (Venetian, 1650-1718)
From the book "Memorie istorio-geografiche della Morea riacquistata dall'armi venete del regno di Negroponte e degli altri luoghi circonvicini, e di quelli c'hanno sottomesso nella Dalmacia, e nell'Epiro. Dal principio della guerra... al Turco nel 1684 sin'all'anno presente 1687. - Venezia, Ruinetti, 1687". Plate is titled "Forteza Di Cin Presso Dall Armi Dell'ser:Repv: Venetz. Adi 28 Setenbre 1686 in Dalmacia". Copper plate engraving on laid paper with a three crescent moon watermark. Image commemorates the Republic of Venice's historical military victory over a Dalmatian fortress, Sign. The Venetian troops are identified by their banner bearing the city's symbol and patron saint: Mark the Evangelist depicted as a lion. Impression apprx 10-1/8" x 13-1/2". Overall paper measures apprx 12-7/8" x 15-3/4". The last of the three folio editions of this popular work first published in 1686, in which Coronelli reports the events of the war waged at that time by the Venetian republic against the Turks have become rare, particularly those in folio.

John Boydell was a well known print seller who employed some of the best English print makers of his time. The name of the printer, R. Earlem Lecit, can be see on lower right (Richard Earlem).
