15. Circle Of Herri met de (Civetta) Bles, (Dutch, 1480-1550)
"Die Prozession zum Kalvarienberg". Oil on wood, laid on wood, not signed, circa 16th Century. Image apprx 9-1/2" x 14-1/2", overall with frame apprx 12-1/2" x 17-1/2". Painting of Christ and procession with sweeping landscape. Bles is an enigmatic figure presumed to be a.k.a. Herri Patenier who entered the Antwerp Guild in 1535. No signed or documented work by Herri exists, but a small group of distinctive works has been ascribed to him, characterized by panoramic landscapes dominating the figure groups in the manner of Patenier. His work was popular with Italian collectors, who called him 'Civetta' (little owl) because he often included owls in his pictures.

"Yvonne Comtesse d'Orleans". Oil on canvas, framed. Signature not found; may perhaps have been larger at one time; on old stretcher with corner brackets. A charming image of the young aristocrat. Canvas size apprx 18" x 14-1/2", overall with gilt frame apprx 23" x 19". Nameplate on frame.

17. Attributed to Thomas Churchyard (English, 1798-1865)
Country Landscape. Small oil on canvas mounted onto a wooden board, framed. Thomas Churchyard was a painter of the Suffolk School. A lawyer by profession, Churchyard was an avid art collector and became known for his intimate landscapes or nature scenes. This particular piece is a fluidly painted depiction of a country road with a small figure at its center. It has a wonderful sense of movement and texture. Image meeasures apprx 4" x 6". Framed in a gold painted wood frame with name placqard at bottom. With frame, entire item measures apprx 8" x 10".

19. Albert Insley (American, 1842-1937)
"Down The Hudson from Below Poughkeepsie". Oil on canvas, signed lower right "Albert Insley 1880", framed. A fine Hudson River School inspired canvas of a steam barge on the Hudson River. On a four keyed stretcher, the back of which is inscribed in pencil by the artist. Following artist's title, "Painted by Albert Insley 51 West 10th St. New York City". Canvas measures apprx 20" x 32", overall in mid 20th Century frame apprx 27-1/2" x 39-1/4". From 1872-1918, Insley lived and worked from this address, offered to him by a patron. Most of his subjects are views along the East River; New York Harbor; barges along the Hudson; Brooklyn and the north shores of Staten Island; northern New Jersey and Boyonne; and later along the coast of Maine. His work is in such collections as the Archives of American Art, Washington, D.C.; Cragsmoor Free Library, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Harding Museum, Chicago; Jersey City Museum, New Jersey; Preservation Society, Newport, Rhode Island; and the Rockland Historical Society, New York.

20. A Large Russian Icon, circa Early 19th Century
"St. George". Oil on board icon with Old Russian text in upper margin. Upper right has a view of the annunciation and upper left shows Christ giving blessing. St. George is driving out a king in lower portion. This style of icon was made for the general public by a trained icon painter. Beneath the pigment are incised lines for the layout of the painting. Apprx 15-1/4" x 12-1/2". Verso has wax blessing.

"St. George in Stages" Oil on wood panel, Old Russian text titles for four vignettes, crimson red lettering along upper margin. Standing central figure of St. George. Very finely painted, this once was a beautiful icon. Much restoration needed to bring this icon back to it's original state. Apprx 12-1/2" x 10-1/8".

22. Italian, circa mid/late 19th Century
Annunciation Angel. Oil on hard surface artist's board, oval, signed lower right in red (? A. Parsini). Framed in a newer frame with gold painted oval opening mat. Gabriel carries white lilies, an iconographic representation of the purity of the Virgin Mary. His gestures indicate the bestowing of a blessing. The Angel Gabriel is depicted in his traditional garb with feathered wing and and angelic golden curls. He bears a contemplative expression on his face. His hands and cheeks are elegantly and delicately painted. Due to the small size and presence of a signature this piece was probably a private commission as a domestic devotional object. Oval painting measures apprx 8-1/2" X 7".

23. English School, 1880-1920
Pre-Raphaelite angel holds the veil of Veronica. Oil on chamfered wood panel, not signed, not framed. Saddened angel holds an image of a suffering Christ. According to legend Veronica took pity on Jesus as he climbed Calvary, stumbling under the weight of the Crucifix. Veronica wiped the blood and sweat from his face with her veil. Out of thanks for her kindness, Jesus left a painting-like imprint of his face on the veil. The angel's face is rendered with great sweetness and delicacy. Background is wonderfully patterned with a gold, semi-floral motif on forest green. Angel's wing is also leafed in gold. Angel's halo is leafed in gold and has a relief pattern impressed. Measures apprx 22" x 24".

24. After "Sophie de France" by Jean-Marc Nattier (French, 19th Century)
Portrait. Oil on canvas, not signed, framed. Label on back provides formal information about Nattier and reads "...A famous and popular portrait painter of men and women of the French aristocracy of his day, his subjects being confined especially to women and members of the royal family...Sophie de France was a daughter of Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska". This lovely portrait is a 19th Century copy. Canvas measures 29-1/2" x 24". Frame is carved wood with bronze paint finish. Overall measure is 34-1/4" x 29".

Lovely scene of the German countryside with a castle. Oil on canvas board, framed. One can see a tiny figure of a girl playing in the foreground of the painting. Wonderfully balanced composition. Otto Modersohn was a well know painter from the German landscape school. He works in a subtle palette to create quiet outdoor scenes. Painting measures apprx 14" x 11-1/2". With light colored wooden frame, entire item measures apprx 20-1/4" x 17".

Dutch Flower Market. Oil on canvas, framed. A scene of daily life in a harbor town flower market. Groups of people gather to bargain over the price of bright potted blossoms. Behind the figures one can see the sails of many ships and the facades of the nearby houses. Signed on lower edge to right of center "A. Gregoy". Canvas size is apprx 17" x 21-1/4". With carved silver antiqued painted frame, entire item measures apprx 27-1/2" x 32-1/2".

29. Anders Monsen Askevold (Swedish, 1834 - 1900)
"Capioller Mountains", c. 1870. Oil on paper, on canvas, signed, framed. Measures apprx 15-1/2" x 19-1/2". Askevold is considered one of the great Norwegian artists of the 19th century. His career was established where he first worked in Bergen (Norway), where studied with H.L. Reusch and later after 1855 in Dusseldorf, Germany, where he was a student of Hans Gude at the Academy. Askevold moved permanently to Dusseldorf, Germany to spend the remainder of his life.
Nearly all his works show motifs from Norway. He depicted the nature and the country life in the Fjords during summer. Askevold visited his native country regularly during the summer months to find inspiration for new pictures. His paintings were exhibited widely throughout Northern Europe, winning favorable comparison with such contemporaries as the American landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. He was even referred to as the "Bierstadt of Norway" by the art critics of Berlin and Munich.
