A period American secretary has a slant front opening to reveal an olive green baize writing tablet. Above the writing area is a central section flanked by two narrow drawers, meant for holding letters. The central section, complete with a small brass key, opens to reveal a hidden drawer on top, a large pigeon hole and a small drawer with a brass pull on the bottom. On either side of the letter drawers are 3 small pigeon holes with carved aprons on the top over one long narrow drawer and two smaller drawers, all with brass pulls. Interior of drawers have ink stains on secondary poplar wood. Carved apron at bottom with carved ball and talon feet. Lower drawers do not have locking mechanisms. Apprx 44"H x 49"W x 23-1/2"D.

German or Northern European walnut carved armoire in the Renaissance Style. Elaborate tired cornice set with a carved panel depicting a mounted soldier with the head of an enemy. Two doors with oval molded panels and carved in a deep relief with cherubs, ladies, scholars, soldiers and more. Two drawers below, side by side, armoire rests on massive bun feet. Interior shelves and massive original locks. Apprx 8'5"H x 9'4"W.

Pair of marble columns in the Doric style with simple form and clean lines. Base and capital are comprised of three pieces of marble. Shaft is very light grey striated with brown flecks throughout. Columns are quite sturdy and heavy Measures apprx 39-1/2"H x 16"D at capital.

Striking pair of marble planters. Marble is terra-cotta colored with veins of white and yellow running through. Bowl of planter is surrounded by broad stylized leaves on the rim and leafy swags punctuated by lions heads below. The segmented column stand is banded at various intervals; about half way down is a pattern of grape clusters and leaves. Entire item sits on an octagonal base. Overall apprx 48"H x 16"W at opening.

This dresser has a bow front with carved leaf work on the upper corners and an off-white marble top with gray veins. Marble top has beveled edges and scalloped front. Four dovetailed drawers all with wood escutcheons flanked by two pierced brass handles with conforming coiled bail handles. Top drawer is divided into three sections on the interior. Feet are on castors and two front feet are heavily carved. Apprx 39-1/2" x 45-1/2" x 20-1/2".

Carved drawer fronts of solid wood, three top drawers and two lowers cabinets with locking mechanisms. Left cabinet has shelves and right has four silverware drawers on sliders. Serving area has two heights with a pediment back. Center is apprx 37-1/2" and sides apprx 39-3/4", pediment back, apprx 48-3/4"H x 7'W x 23-3/4"D.

Small kidney-shaped wooden table features very nice geometric patterned inlay on top, body and drawers. The top shelf has brass banding and pierced brass gallery. Both dovetailed drawers have ornate brass pulls. Brass detailing also on the top of legs and on feet. Measures apprx 25-1/2"T x 18-1/2"W.

465. Cassone and Set of Chairs, Possibly Italian, circa 19th Century


Cassone (Italian blanket chest) and two side chairs of dark walnut are impressive in proportion. All feature ornate carving throughout, including a gargoyle type face in roundel on center of pierced seat back. Cassone has initials A.S. carved on back and a hinged seat that opens to reveal a large storage area. Arms of cassone are in the form of an animal head. Chairs are somewhat unusual in that the front and back legs are a solid piece of carved wood, each ending in two feet. Cassone apprx 59"T x 60"W x 22"D, chairs apprx 44"T x 16"W x 16"D.
