75. Ora Coltman (American, 1858-1940)
"The White House". Oil on canvasboard, inscribed/signed lower right, framed. Titled in pencil on verso. Image apprx 10" x 10-1/2". Overall with blond wood frame apprx 13" x 13-1/2".
Coltman is a well known Cleveland artist whose work is difficult to find and is well known amongst Cleveland School collectors. Coltman studied with William Merritt Chase at the Students Art League and exhibited at the Case Library in 1902 withbwatercolors from his travels in England and France. He also exhibited in the Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows circa 1920-30 as well as Cleveland galleries such as Gage Gallery, Women's City Club, Lindner's Little Gallery as well as the Art Institute and Academys of Chicago and Philadelphia. As a WPA painter in 1933, Coltman was commissioned to paint the mural "Dominance Of The City" for the Cleveland Public Library. He is also responsible for the bronze plaque in President Garfield's tomb in Lakeview Cemetary, Cleveland, Ohio.

"Les Varans" (The Dragons). Oil on canvas, framed. Surrealistic scene depicts a nude woman surrounded by green Monitor lizards with spiky rocks looming in the background. Painting is signed and dated at lower right corner. Canvas measures apprx 28-3/4" x 45-1/2". On verso numerous tags including: "Surrealistes et Symbolistes", "3042" and "Salon des Independants 1964". Frame is gold painted decorative wood. Overall piece measures apprx 33-3/4" x 50-1/2".

"St. Stephens, Foggy Day". Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Canvas apprx 16" x 20" with small wood liner surround. This misty painting is of a Cleveland, Ohio landmark which the artist has painted frequently in different seasons and in different times of day. A devout Plein-Air painter, Johnston has become masterful at depicting the many manifestations of Cleveland's moody climate.
