537. American Child's Sewing Sampler, circa 1797

Pretty stitching sampler made by Elizabeth Frances Raywood in March of 1797. Alphabet featured on top, beneath are numbers 1-21 and then lower case letters. The center displays a poem: "Religion is a secure refuge in seasons of deepest distress. It smooths the chagrin of life makes us easy in all circumstances and fills our souls with the greatest peace that our natures are capable of". Maker's name appears on bottom with motif of flowers and trees. Cloth measures apprx 10-3/4"W x 13-3/4"L. Verso bears sticker from The Frame Center Gallery. With simple wooden frame, entire item measures 12"W x 15-1/4"L.
