539. English Child's Sewing Sampler, circa 1842

Sweet sampler by Phoebe Jaybes, aged 9 yrs. on Jan. 7, 1842. Features two adages: "Favor is deceitful and/ beauty is vain but a woman/ that feareth the Lord she/ shall be praised" and " While I am a pilgrim here/ let thy Love my spirit cheer/ As my guide my guard my/ Friend lead to my journey/ End" Embroidered chain of flowers and green leaves frames the words and a lower motif of birds and bouquets. Name and date can be read on bottom. Cloth measures apprx 10-1/2" x 13-1/2". Text of poems on verso along with a tag from The Campus Gallery. With wooden frame, entire piece measures apprx 11-1/2" x 14-1/2".
