| 465. Cassone and Set of Chairs, Possibly Italian, circa 19th Century
Cassone (Italian blanket chest) and two side chairs of dark walnut are impressive in proportion. All feature ornate carving throughout, including a gargoyle type face in roundel on center of pierced seat back. Cassone has initials A.S. carved on back and a hinged seat that opens to reveal a large storage area. Arms of cassone are in the form of an animal head. Chairs are somewhat unusual in that the front and back legs are a solid piece of carved wood, each ending in two feet. Cassone apprx 59"T x 60"W x 22"D, chairs apprx 44"T x 16"W x 16"D. 2,800/3,500 back to catalog |
