55. "En Grisaille" Illustration (American, circa Early 20th Century)

Oil on canvas, framed and unsigned however in the style of Walter G. Ratterman (American, 1887-1944). Grisaille is a style of monochromatic painting in shades of gray. It is often a painting to work from; the technique was used by magazine illustrators, such as for this item. The colorless image was easiest to reproduce in print before the invention of color techniques in printing books and periodicals. Scene shows a cozy family listening to stories told by a man holding a pipe. The setting surrounding the figures is simply gessoed. Canvas measures apprx 23" x 29". With gold painted frame, entire item measures apprx 27-1/2" x 34".
