525. Directoire Skeletonized Clock (French, circa 1790-1800)

Elegant gilt bronze skeleton clock from the French Directoire period. Skeleton clock refers to design where one can see the mechanical movement. The Directoire period was following the French revolution when royal decoration was replaced by classic ornament. Clock is designed in two round levels. Upper gallery bears clock face which stands on four feet. Face is porcelain, crowned with scrolling floral decoration. Pendulum is a starburst featuring a androgynous face in the center. Bottom level has a six petaled flower in center. Measures apprx 13-1/4"H x 5"W.
