Pre-Raphaelite angel holds the veil of Veronica. Oil on chamfered wood panel, not signed, not framed. Saddened angel holds an image of a suffering Christ. According to legend Veronica took pity on Jesus as he climbed Calvary, stumbling under the weight of the Crucifix. Veronica wiped the blood and sweat from his face with her veil. Out of thanks for her kindness, Jesus left a painting-like imprint of his face on the veil. The angel's face is rendered with great sweetness and delicacy. Background is wonderfully patterned with a gold, semi-floral motif on forest green. Angel's wing is also leafed in gold. Angel's halo is leafed in gold and has a relief pattern impressed. Measures apprx 22" x 24". 1,000/2,000 Sold $2,357.50 back to catalog |
