104. Master I.Z., after Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)

"The Circumcision", woodcut on paper, created ca. 1505. The image comes from Durer's series, the Life of Mary as one of her seven sorrows. Note the cloaked figure of Mary standing off to the right and the infant Christ at the center of the composition. Artist monogram in lower right image and artists initials in lower center margin. Image measures apprx 11-1/2" x 8-1/4". During the second half of the 15th century, a group of brilliant engravers known only by their initials emerged in Germany. They are the Masters B.G., B.M., L.G.S., A.G., B.R., and W.H. to name a few.
