105. In the Manner of Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)

"Saint Christopher", woodcut on laid paper, removed from a collector's album. Christopher was a giant who assisted travelers with crossing a stream. One day he carried a small child across the stream; the child's weight nearly crushed him. When they arrived on the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world on himself. Christopher's hermit mentor can be seen on the lower right. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. Durer's monogram is in a cartouche on the bottom margin. Image is a light impression, image apprx 8-1/4" x 5-3/8", overall paper apprx 9-1/4" x 6-1/4".
