108. Master L Engraving (Dutch, circa 16th Century)

Copper plate engraving on laid paper from a collectors album mounted on new paper. Large Fleur de Lis watermark visible. Images is a finely executed depiction of Christ on the Cross at Calvary. The crucifixion occurs in the top left corner, one can recognized the Mary's mourning His death, the Roman soldiers playing lots for his garments, and the instruments of His passion. In the foreground a woman and child sit to remind the viewer of Christ's infancy. Illegible writing is in lower right corner. Impression measures apprx 11-1/4" x 16-5/16", overall paper apprx 11-1/2" x 16-1/2". During the second half of the 15th Century, a group of brilliant engravers known only by their initials emerged in Germany.
