| 15. Circle Of Herri met de (Civetta) Bles, (Dutch, 1480-1550)
"Die Prozession zum Kalvarienberg". Oil on wood, laid on wood, not signed, circa 16th Century. Image apprx 9-1/2" x 14-1/2", overall with frame apprx 12-1/2" x 17-1/2". Painting of Christ and procession with sweeping landscape. Bles is an enigmatic figure presumed to be a.k.a. Herri Patenier who entered the Antwerp Guild in 1535. No signed or documented work by Herri exists, but a small group of distinctive works has been ascribed to him, characterized by panoramic landscapes dominating the figure groups in the manner of Patenier. His work was popular with Italian collectors, who called him 'Civetta' (little owl) because he often included owls in his pictures. Purchased from Dorotheum, Germany, 2002. 7,000/10,000 back to catalog |
