139. Richard Parks Bonington (English 1802-1828), Attributed

"Standing Figures", pencil sketch on creme colored wove paper, edges appear to be trimmed. Unsigned, however attributed in graphite on matting. Paper apprx 8-1/4" x 4-1/4". Provenance: from the ex-collection the late James Crabtree of Grosvenor Square, London. Bonington studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and in 1820 entered the studio of Gros. At that time he formed a close friendship with Delacroix. Best known for his sparkling watercolors painted rapidly, directly from nature, Bonington also brought to his oil painting an immediacy and dexterity unusual in his day. Represented in the Louvre and in many distinguished British galleries, Bonington's work can also be seen in the Wallace Collection, London.
