29. Edward MacGregor (American, active 1853-1872) Historical Painting. Oil on canvas, painted after an engraving. Verso describes subject of painting as "Drake playing bowls on the sea front before going to set sail to fight the arriving Spanish Armada". Costumes are highly detailed and subject matter is amusing. Signed on lower left hand corner. Verso has artist information and states the painting was shown in an exhibit for the Maryland Historical Society, in 1856. Measures apprx 13"H x 17"W. Tranquil scene depicts a rustic farm with a small cottage off to the left side and cows in the distance. Two small figures appear to be engaged in their daily chores. Painting style is precise and detailed. Verso has red and white Cleveland Museum tag with a number of TR 12426/14.
