Charles Théodore Frère (French, 1814-1888)

15. Charles Théodore Frère (French, 1814-1888)

"Entering Cairo". Oil on board, signed lower left, circa 1850's, framed. Finely painted image of a rising sun with background silhouettes of palms and architecture in Cairo. Foreground depicts figures traveling along the Nile river, some on camel. Frame is simple with subdued shell and foliate accents. Verso has three unidentifiable tags. Board measures apprx 6-3/8"H x 12-3/8"W, overall in frame apprx 10-7/8"H x 16-7/8"W. Frère began his career painting French landscapes. During his first trip to Algeria in 1839 he became devoted to the representation of the Muslim world and the Orientalist movement. The Egyptian government gave him the title of "bey", which translates from Turkish "beg", or "lord", a title carried formerly by the senior officers and officials of the Ottoman army. In 1861 he made his final visit to the eastern Mediterranean, traveling in the party of the Empress Eugénie (1826-1920) during the construction and manifestations of Suez Canal.

16. Mariano José Maria Bernardo Fortuny y Carbó (Spanish/Italian, 1838-1874)

Study for "The Hindu Snake Charmer". Oil on canvas, not signed and attributed, not framed. This fairly completed painting appears to be done as a working study for the masterpiece of 1869. Interestingly, the canvas has a seam running across the top from edge to edge; the artist probably used a piece of cloth that was available in order to work through changes he wished to make in the finished piece. The finished piece is in the Walter's Art Gallery in Baltimore. Another version of this subject is found in the Hermitage in Leningrad. (Reference: page 141 of Les Orientalistes de e'cecole Italianne by Caroline Juler; the painting in Baltimore). Measures apprx 10-1/2"H x 24-3/4"W.
