Baltimore: Published by Lucas Brothers Baltimore, dated 1855. Apprx 56 hand-colored plates with tissue guards and two ornate chromolithographed title pages. First section has 133 pgs, "notes" section has 96 pgs. Publisher's full brown leather with embossed boards. Spine has five raised bands with six compartments with gilt and embossed title. Gilt paper edges.The name Gladys Parsons is inscribed on first page. Cover measures apprx 11-1/2"H x 9"W.

Rokeby; A Poem. Walter Scott. Edinburgh, James Ballantyne and Co. 1815, the sixth edition. 413 pages, full red Morocco leather with gilt tooling on covers, edges and spine. Spine has four raised bands with embossed and gilt compartments and lettering. Brown marbled end papers. Slipcase part leather with gilt title on the spine for Lady and The Lake. The highlights of this book are the two for edged paintings of the Holy Island and ruins of Lindisfarne Abby and Barnard Castle. One appears to be signed. Interior is clean and bright. Apprx 8-3/4" x 5-1/2".

Chez Durand, A Paris, 1752; Avec Approbation & Privilege du Roy. First French Edition and the first translation into any language of Franklin's famous work on electricity. 222 numbered pages, plus preliminaries, "Table des Matieres" with one fold-out engraved plate; quite rare. Original binding, full brown calf, five raised bands with compartment decorated with gilt spider webs. Tan leather insert with gilt letters. Marbled endpapers, tooled and gilt edges and red paper edges. Apprx 6-5/8" x 4-3/8".

526. Questiones Morales Magistri Martini Magistri Perspica Cissimi Theologie Pfessoris: de Fortitudine Nouissime
Paris, circa 1510-19, Iehan Granion device in ornate woodblock on title page. Titled page has Lisbon double stamp in black ink, upper right corner. Apprx 102 mis-numbered (101) pages in double columns in 69 lines. Inscribed on fly page in blue ink to "Jamie Bonbright", James C.H. Bonbright, the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal 1955-58, penned by unknown collegue. End paper bear exlibris tag "From the Library of George Dunn of Woolley Hall Near Maidenhead", along with previous scholars' graphite notes. Contemporary ornately blindstamped calf leather. Four raised bands on spine most of leather there missing. Boards are starting to detatch. Edge of paper marked in brown ink with short Latin title. Interior clean with mild toning, title page soiled from handeling. Light yellow stain at lower portion of parper edge. Apprx 10-3/4" x 8".

527. Orosii Presbiteri Hispani Adversus Paganos Historiarum Libri Septem
Paulus Orosius was a fifth-century Spanish theologian and historiographer who was most famous for the Seven Books of History against the Pagans. This work defended the early Christian Church against the fault of incurring the wrath of the pagan gods, such as famine, earthquakes and pestilence. Orosius writes that the Roman Empire had been suffering such misfortunes before Christianity arrived. The book was extremely popular, surviving in over 200 manuscripts and provided an intellectual foothold for Augustine's City of God, his good friend, to whom the book was dedicated. Orosius dedicated his work to Augustine, his close friend, who suggested he write this book. This book is very scarce and can be found in several rare book rooms in libraries around the world. Woodcut compartments are of very high quality, attributed to Anton Woensam von Worms (c.1500-1541). Alfabet woodcuts designed after Albrect Durer's Alphabet, with cherubs and creatures. Ornate woodcut device of Eucharius Cervicornus (Flemish, circa 1516-1547). Title page dated 1526. Apprx 11-1/2" x 8-1/2".

528. Petri Aurelii Theologi Opera, Iussu Et Impensis Cleri Gallicani Deuno in Lucem Edita
Jean Duvergier de Hauranne (French 1581-1643) abbot of Saint Cyran. Pseudonym of Petrus Aurelius, (printed by) "Excudebat Antonius Vitray, Regis, & Cleri Gallicani", Paris, 1642. This book was seized at the printers before the building was destroyed and contains what no other book like this has; at the end of part three, page fourteen is a page which states this is a confiscated book and is part of the collection of such books. One bound vellum book, in three parts. The third part of this book was the reason it was banned. Latin text. Two color title page with printers device. First three blank pages have watermark of a man on a horse. wearing a hat and blowing a bugle. No visible watermark on other subsequent pages. Facing page with script in brown ink, dated 1764. Embossed boards, five raised bands on spine. Booksellers sticker on interior front board from C.J. Stewart, London. Apprx 14-1/4" x 10".
French abbot of Saint-Cyran and a founder of the Jansenist movement. His opposition to Cardinal de Richelieu's policies caused his imprisonment.

529. Augustan Golden Age (1694-1763) Book of Engravings, probably from The Royal Collection of Dresden
In part, a bound book/folio of copper plate engravings on rag paper, circa 1740. Each page apprx 19-1/2" x 13-1/4". Numbered plates start at #126 and finishes with 198, all of which are very good impressions, images of sculptures, friezes, mummies, and Egyptian pottery. The last part has a title page "Suite de Marbres Modernes & c." This section highlights Roman and mythological subjects in sculpture. The are hand number plates, starting at 210 and ending with 208 and are out of order. Title page has a royal emblem of Augustus II, 1670–1733, king of Poland (1697–1733). A patron of the arts, Augustus greatly embellished Dresden. Apprx 74 plates overall, not including the title page for the last part. This is probably volume II of a two volume set, the first probably engravings of paintings.

Sans woodcuts, this book of the 15th century has apprx 263 pages, bound in leather with gilt tooling, decorated spine and red leather title inserted into upper compartment. Printed in two columns of 41 lines, numbered pages. First page has black ink stamp from Lucerne. Book measures apprx 12" x 9". Originally the book was illustrated by Michael Wolgemut (German, 1434-1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for the Franciscan Stephan Fridolin.

531. Collectors book of Works by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786-1865)
Accordion book of Yakusha-e, prints Kabuki actors. Book contains a preface
in Japanese along with an illustrated story page and twelve actor portraits,
one of which is a “Mirror Portrait”. The mirror portrait is of Nakamura
Fukusuke in the role of Ohara Takematsu which is from "The mirror of today's
picture" (Ima-yo oshie kagami). This has the censor’s seal Aratame with
date, circa 1859, probably published by Fujiokaya Keijiro. Most other
woodblocks have the publishers seal of Yokogawa, with date and publishers seals, most woodblocks appear to be published by Uoya Eikichi. The artist signature is enclosed in a “Toshidama” cartouche, signed "Toyokuni ga", circa 1859-1860. Each page is apprx 14-1/4” x 10-1/4”. The impressions are crisp and have wonderful color which is not faded and are very well registered. Some plates have the use of “Bokashi”, a gradation of color with applied green tone at lower area. Others have “Kirazuri”, the use of fine mica flakes which were scattered on the print while it was still wet, producing a sparkling effect. A memorandum tag has been applied to interior of cover, written for General Biddle by Mr. R.Y. Aka, dated July 11, 1957.
