Proceeds from the sale of this item will be donated to the Lyric Opera, Cleveland. A hand colored restrike engraving from the original painting, "Sportsmen Halting at a Highland Bothy". Engraved by James Scott and published by Henry Graves & Co., London, 1858. Plate size apprx 23-1/4" x 35-1/4". mounted in a beige over mat with a foamcore backing, apprx 32-1/2" x 44-1/2".

137. Two Works by Captain Edward Jones, circa early 19th Century
1)"Valencia, 1. Oct. 1833", ink wash on paper. Verso inscribed by the artist "Window in an antique house of a Nobleman in Valencia-Spain 1. October 1830's-Tuesday" and signed by the artist. Paper apprx 7" x 5-3/4".
2)"Foligno, 3. June 1818", ink wash on paper. Verso inscribed by the artist "Italy, Holy Water Vessel at Folign..." and signed by the artist and dated. Paper apprx 4-1/2" x 6-1/4".
We have been cataloguing the sketches works on paper of Captain Edward Jones over the last year. During his European tour, he has offered a view of the past by documenting villages, towns-people and landscapes. His detailed accounts of his surroundings and playful use of light and shadow lend something more than any amatuer illustrator could create.

Six engravings of theatrical actors, on paper. Each engraving was copyrighted in 1887 or 1888 by Philadelphia publishers, Gebbie & Co., with the engraver being Gebbie & Husson Co. Ltd. Lot includes: Junius Booth as Richard III, Joseph Jefferson as Rip Van Winkle, Mrs. John Drew as Mrs. Malaprop, Edwin Forrest as King Lear, Edmund Kean as Richard III, and Edwin Booth as Hamlet. "Le Cardinal Mercier Protège La Belgique". Large lithographic poster on paper, framed under glass. Poster displays imposing figure of the Belgian cardinal in iconic pointed cap and curled staff. Most of the image is in black and white with the exception of the cardinal's robe which is colored orange. The background is filled with swirling lines and a crowd of people.
