98. Jacobus Houbraken (Dutch, 1698-1780 )
Four 19th Century impressions from the original plates for "The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain" by Thomas Birch (1705-1766) of the Royal Society with engravings by Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780 ) and George Virtue (1684-1756). It was first published in London by Knapton from 1747-1756. All are signed in plate: "J. Houbraken sculps. Amst.-Impensis J. & P. Knapton Londini.", dates include 1738, 1738, 1740 and 1741. Printed on wove paper, edges are trimmed, not matted, in frames under glass. Inscribed in the lower margin from the collection or in the possession of the following; The Duke of Bedford, the Earl of Burlington, Thomas Cook, Esq and Gilbert West, Esq. Plate impressions apprx 14-3/4"T x 9-3/8"W.

99. A Sanguine Drawing, circa 18th Century
A very delicate red chalk study of a cherubic boy, reclining. Tipped to backing paper, probably removed from a collector's album, backing paper has ink lines and pencil number lower right "N.36". With conservation, this would be a lovely addition to any collection. Apprx 4-15/16" x 6-4/16".

102. Two works by Francisco Goya y Lucientes (Spanish, 1746-1828)
1)"Los Caprichos: Ni mas ni menos", plate 41. No visible watermark, cream colored wove paper. Impression from before the steel facing of the plate. Apprx 7-7/8" x 5-7/8" plate mark. Overall measures apprx 10-1/2" x 7-1/2".
2))"Los Caprichos: Buen Viage", plate 64. No visible watermark, cream colored wove paper. Impression from before the steel facing of the plate. Apprx 8-51/2" x 5-7/8" plate mark. Overall measures apprx 11-1/4" x 7-1/4".
The eighty etchings of "Los Caprichos" were the first collection Goya produced for sale as a single set. In 1803, fearful of the Spanish Inquisition, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia, issued in the ensuing years by that institution.

Three hand colored engravings from the "Regne Animal, Poissons", Paris, circa 1829, published by N. Remond. Plates include are numbers 24, 91 and 114. Each has beautiful period hand coloring with special attention to shading. Each page apprx 10-1/2" x 6-3/4" and matted.
Le regne animal distribue d'apres son organisation, pour servir de base a l'histoire naturelle des animaux et d'introduction a l'anatomie compare. Paris: Fortin, Masson et Co. 4 volumes. Poissons 2: 104351. [Roux (1976, Bulletin de Liaison, Museum National d'Histoire, Paris 25: 16) has established that the first edition of Cuvier's Regne Animal, which is usually cited as 1817, was actually published in 1816.]

TAB XXXV. 3) "Plan d'un Jardin, apartenant á Son Altesse Roïale, Madame la Princesse Charlotte Amalie". TAB XLVI. All are steel engravings on wove paper, backed with foamcore. Each page includes a distance key and descriptive title written in German, French and Dutch. Plate impressions measure apprx 18"H x 11-1/4".
Lot also includes "Facing Charcoal Making". Plate XXXVIII. Etching on wove paper, matted and backed with foamcore. Page details, in two parts, the charcoal making process. Top shows the 7 steps required to build a pile or clamp, the mounds used to heat the raw material which will then combust to become charcoal. Colliers can be seen at work.
