Movable tab at bottom raises the arm of the figure to reveal a floral garland and finishing text. Mounted to archival materials with protective plastice window, Valentine measures apprx 3-7/8" x 3-1/8", in mat apprx 7-3/4" x 7".

593. A Fancy German Valentine, circa early 19th Century
"Respect", printed German Valentine with period hand coloring and movable parts. Tab at the top reveals cupid with two printed declarations of love. Embossed goild foil border surround vignette of a couple walking through a garden. Card is numbered 10 and is from Sigmund Rudl (circa 1802) from Prague. Card apprx 5" x 3-3/4", overall in mat apprx 7-7/8" x 7".

"They know my Heart", printed German Valentine with period hand coloring. Beveled vignette shows a bunch of flowers that knows the sender's heart drums with satisfaction, hoping the recipients will as well, as stated in printed text in sqaured window below. Background paper is beautifully decorated with color and edged in a gold embossed foil. Card measures apprx 3-1/2" x 2-5/8". Tipped to mat overall apprx 7-7/8" x 7". Verso of card has illegible writing in brown ink.

"Here I Bring Fortune", a printed German Valentine with period hand coloring, sent by Joseph Fischer, dated 1812. Figure of a man standing with a board with busts of men and women. In his right arm he holds paddle which removes, revealing text about the fortunes of love. The verso is inscribed by the sender and signed and dated. card measures apprx 4-3/8" x 2-3/4". Tipped into mat with protective covering, overall apprx 7-7/8" x 7".

597. Hand Cut Heart
Lovely paper heart is symmetrically cut paper in the form of a heart surrounded with leafy garlands. In the center are a pair of hands as a symbol of honesty. Intricate heart is embellished with woven strands of hair. Including locks of one's beloved's hair was a way to either remember the departed or as a sentimental momentum. Heart is glued to a brown velvet square. Measures apprx 7-1/4"H x 6-1/4"W.

Elaborate easel-backed Valentine features a four-petaled shape mounted on cardboard. Edges are hand cut and festooned with bits of ribbon, lace and fabric. Top layer is made from parchment paper and is folded to add more texture. Center features an embossed card with sides that fold out to reveal a love poem. Measures apprx 10"H x 12"W.

599. Lot of 6 Fancy Valentines
1) Pretty Valentine features a painted gilt card and gilt doily through which can be seen a image of a young girl in a floral wreath. Cover is further decorated with a piece of blue velvet ribbon and other scraps. Interior has a printed poem. 2) Valentine is made with pieces of floral printed paper with a top image of a small boy and girl framed with a foil doily. Verso is blank. 3) Lace paper card features scraps of children and Lilies-of-the-Valley. Interior is brightly printed with a poem called "A Request". 4) Embossed card is printed with blue and gilt ink. Round lace paper "pop-up" frame surrounds an image of a gentleman assisting a lady out of a carriage. Interior has a poem printed in pink ink. 5) Triple layer card features a top foil filigree backing a scrap of a cherub. Poem on interior is called "To My Valentine". 6) Fancy Valentine with three layers displays a top piece of foil lace cut paper which frames an image reading "An Offering of". Interior has a poem entitled "True Love".

600. Lot of Five Special Valentines
1) "Fold-out" Valentine transforms into a 3-D scene of cherubs playing cards with a young woman in a green dress. The edge of their table cloth reads "To My Sweet Valentine". Measures apprx 6-1/4"H x 9-1/4"W. 2) "Fold-out" card depicts cupid walking up stairs to present a heart to a young girl who is looking out of her window. The two are framed by a towering lilac bush. Measures apprx 9-3/4"H x 5-1/2"W. 3) Square Valentine is easel backed scalloped edged cardboard with a pink lace paper layer revealing a robin and decorated with flower scraps. Verso is blank. Measures apprx 5-1/2" square. 4) Pretty square Valentine is printed with teal and gilt ink and decorated with a paper doily. Top bears a folded envelope which when opened, reveals two cats. Interior has printed poem. Measures 7-1/4" square. 5) Hanging Valentine has three cards attached by a yellow ribbon. Top image is a heart shape with an image of a cherub, second is oval depiction of the profile of a young boy and bottom is a scalloped heart with a message, "A Token of Love and Heart's Greeting".
