| 17. Jean Jacques Henner (French, 1829-1905)
"A Red Haired Beauty". Oil on canvas, signed lower left, canvas apprx 18" x 14" (45.7 x 35.6 cm). On original stretcher with newer metal-leafed frame. Provenance: purchased May 26th, 1992, from Christie's New York, lot number 120. Henner was born in Dornach (Alsace), France. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, beginning in 1848. After winning the Prix de Rome in 1858, he moved to Italy for five years. While in Italy he discovered the work of many artists, especially Correggio, that would become an apparent influence on his subsequent paintings. During the rest of his career Henner was a recipient of almost every award available to an artist of that period. He remains best know for his nudes painted with broad heavy strokes and sfumato to soften their contours. These figures are endowed with milky flesh and russet hair, and consistently set against shadowy brown-toned landscapes. 5,000/7,000 Sold $4,600.00 back to catalog |
