| 18. Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839-1924)
"Sair d'Automne". Beautiful full length portrait depicts a local French girl standing with a flower cart in the artists' garden terrace with a view of the Seine in the distance. Signed and dated Paris, 1921 in lower right corner, as well as back of stretcher. Measures apprx 45" x 34-1/2". Framed with simple, carved, light gold antiqued frame in an "Impressionist" finish. This painting has all of the features essential to the artist's work: beautiful young girl, colorful floral surroundings, romantic dreamy setting, large size format. Born to a Pennsylvania Quaker family, Knight attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1858 to 1861 where he was a classmate of Mary Cassatt and Thomas Eakins. He then left for Paris and studied at lÂ’Ecole des Beaux Arts until 1863 when he was obligated to return to the States to serve in the Union army. Once returned to Francy, to stay, Knight focused on painting peasants in their happy moments of work situated in bucolic landscapes with pristine lighting. This particular painting was probably done when the artist lived in Rolleboise. 150,000/250,000 back to catalog |
