| 228. Faberge stamped Sterling Silver Tea Service attributed to Workmaster Julius Rappoport (1851-1917)
Rappoport was one of Faberges rare craftsmen of Jewish origin, was apprenticed in Berlin, opened a workshop in St. Petersburg from 1883-84 and was under exclusive contract. He is best known for his naturalistic animal figures but also executed special commissions for the Imperial Family and the Imperial Cabinet. His workshop was taken over by the First Silver Artel around 1909. This four piece service has an overall bright cut design of scrolling flowers and leaves, intricate lower borders with bead detail and simple elegant lower sections of smooth surface and foot. The handles are organic with a Nouveau flair, the tea pot has bone insulators and a hinged lid, the sugar has a lid however not hinged. Each is monogrammed "H.S.R." and dated "1873" in oval medallions. Each item is stamped with the silver smiths mark in Cyrillic letters, the Faberge hallmark ((Postnikova-Loseva #1421) and an unknown assayer's hallmark. Measurements apprx; tea pot 6-1/2"T, sugar with lid 5-1/4"T, creamer 5" to top of handle and waste bowl 4-1/8"T. Apprx 57.4 troy oz. 6,000/8,000 back to catalog |
