| 79. Beni E. Kosh (African/American, 1917-1993)
"Seated Nude", circa 1960's. Oil on artist's board, estate stamped on verso. Overall with frame apprx 3--1/4" x 22-1/4". The artist spent time in the Merchant Marines and the backdrop for the sitter is evident of a location from his European travels. The juxtaposition of the complimentary colors of yellow and purple are married in tone in the figure. The most striking and interestingly odd feature is the stark white shoes worn by the sitter. Born as Charles Elmer Harris in Cleveland Ohio, he changed his name in the 1960's, which translates to "Son of Ethiopia". The artist rarely exhibited or sold his work and was affiliated with the African-American artists' "Sho-nuff Art Group" and the Karamu House and studied under Cleveland School Artist Paul Travis. His style is very diverse; he experimented with Cubism, portraiture and abstractions in series. He received little recognition during his lifetime, and only became rediscovered days after his death when hundreds of his paintings were rescued and sold to an art dealer. 500/800 Sold $517.50 back to catalog |
