| 15. Charles Théodore Frère (French, 1814-1888)
"Entering Cairo". Oil on board, signed lower left, circa 1850's, framed. Finely painted image of a rising sun with background silhouettes of palms and architecture in Cairo. Foreground depicts figures traveling along the Nile river, some on camel. Frame is simple with subdued shell and foliate accents. Verso has three unidentifiable tags. Board measures apprx 6-3/8"H x 12-3/8"W, overall in frame apprx 10-7/8"H x 16-7/8"W. Frère began his career painting French landscapes. During his first trip to Algeria in 1839 he became devoted to the representation of the Muslim world and the Orientalist movement. The Egyptian government gave him the title of "bey", which translates from Turkish "beg", or "lord", a title carried formerly by the senior officers and officials of the Ottoman army. In 1861 he made his final visit to the eastern Mediterranean, traveling in the party of the Empress Eugénie (1826-1920) during the construction and manifestations of Suez Canal. 14,000/18,000 back to catalog |
