| 527. Orosii Presbiteri Hispani Adversus Paganos Historiarum Libri Septem
Paulus Orosius was a fifth-century Spanish theologian and historiographer who was most famous for the Seven Books of History against the Pagans. This work defended the early Christian Church against the fault of incurring the wrath of the pagan gods, such as famine, earthquakes and pestilence. Orosius writes that the Roman Empire had been suffering such misfortunes before Christianity arrived. The book was extremely popular, surviving in over 200 manuscripts and provided an intellectual foothold for Augustine's City of God, his good friend, to whom the book was dedicated. Orosius dedicated his work to Augustine, his close friend, who suggested he write this book. This book is very scarce and can be found in several rare book rooms in libraries around the world. Woodcut compartments are of very high quality, attributed to Anton Woensam von Worms (c.1500-1541). Alfabet woodcuts designed after Albrect Durer's Alphabet, with cherubs and creatures. Ornate woodcut device of Eucharius Cervicornus (Flemish, circa 1516-1547). Title page dated 1526. Apprx 11-1/2" x 8-1/2". 800/1,200 Sold $776.25 back to catalog |
