Jean Duvergier de Hauranne (French 1581-1643) abbot of Saint Cyran. Pseudonym of Petrus Aurelius, (printed by) "Excudebat Antonius Vitray, Regis, & Cleri Gallicani", Paris, 1642. This book was seized at the printers before the building was destroyed and contains what no other book like this has; at the end of part three, page fourteen is a page which states this is a confiscated book and is part of the collection of such books. One bound vellum book, in three parts. The third part of this book was the reason it was banned. Latin text. Two color title page with printers device. First three blank pages have watermark of a man on a horse. wearing a hat and blowing a bugle. No visible watermark on other subsequent pages. Facing page with script in brown ink, dated 1764. Embossed boards, five raised bands on spine. Booksellers sticker on interior front board from C.J. Stewart, London. Apprx 14-1/4" x 10". French abbot of Saint-Cyran and a founder of the Jansenist movement. His opposition to Cardinal de Richelieu's policies caused his imprisonment. 800/1,200 back to catalog |
