521. Lot of Five Carved African Masks, circa 20th Century


Lot is comprised of five tribal African masks. Four share similar features with exaggerated lips and either round or elliptical eye holes. Wooden masks are painted black and have holes around edges. Three have fiber decoration knotted and braided to appear as hair or beards. One mask is further accented with five clusters of cowry shells sewn onto fabric. One can observe cut marks, from carving, on interiors. Masks range in size from 9"H x 5-1/4"W to 12"H x 7-1/4"W.

Hip picnic accessory made from silver-colored metal with gadrooned sides. Thermos has temperature resistant sides and glass interior to keep beverage hot or cold. Comes with three nesting cups that fit inside cap and a cork to seal mouth. Bottom reads Landers Frary & Clark, Universal, New Brittain Conn U.S.A. and a list of patent dates from 1914 and 1915. Measures apprx 13-3/4"H x 3-1/2"W.

Cauldron shaped planter sits on ball feet and features three rabbit handles attached to rim. Alert rabbits appear to to be jumping into planter as if to eat the greenery that lies therein. Imperial Russian stamp and city, Tula (written in Cyrillic) on bottom. Measures apprx 10-1/4"H x 10-1/4"D.
