| 195. Henry Gerorge Keller (American, 1869-1949)
Baboons. Graphite and colored pencil on paper, framed under glass. Quick study depicts two resting monkeys. Outlines and background are black, fur is brown and cheeks are red. Probably from a sketch book during an "en plein air" exercise at the Cleveland Zoo. Signed on lower right. Paper measures apprx 4-3/4"H x 7-1/4"W. Nicely framed with celedon silk mat and gold colored frame. Entire item measures apprx 11-1/2"H x 13-3/4"W. Provenance: From a prominent Cleveland, Ohio estate. Keller was from Berlin Heights Ohio; about 40 miles west of Cleveland. He was first trained at the Western Reserve School of Design for Women where he received special permission to attend classes. He had a forty-year career as a teacher at the Cleveland School of Art and also directed a summer school at Berlin Heights, Ohio. One of the most prominent Cleveland School artists, Keller was especially influenced by Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse and is best know for his water colors.
