131. James Baker Pyne (English, 1800-1870)

"A River Picnic Party". Pen and ink with wash on wove paper, framed under glass. Image depicts a elegant family and assistants boarding a river boat. The illustrative quality suggests that it may be a preliminary sketch for a watercolor or print or else simply an exercise in depicting figures since landscapes were Pyne's primary subjects. Signed on lower right. Paper measures apprx 6"H x 9"W. Information on image on verso. With cream silk matting and gold leaf frame, entire item measures apprx 17"H x 19"W.

Pyne was native of Bristol, and educated as a lawyer. He began painting in his early twenties and gained a considerable reputation as a landscape painter, in the lyrical Romantic style popular at the time. After moving to London in 1835, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists, where he also served as vice president.
