103. Bernard Picart (French, 1673-1733)

After Titian. Graphite on wove paper, framed under glass. Study depicts an assortment of Christian characters and symbols against an architectural background. Image bears the name of Titian (Tinanus) in lower left corner. No signature of artist. Image measures apprx 5-1/2"H x 11-3/4"W. Verso states that this piece was a cartoon for an engraving after Titian and also includes biographical information. With banded mat and gold colored frame, entire item measures apprx 16"H x 22"W. Provenance: Ex-coll dealer Thomas French then a prominent Cleveland, Ohio estate.

The prolific French artist Bernard Picart was best know for his talent with copper plate engraving, woodcuts and drawing. He spent a portion of his career reproducing the works of the great masters such as with this drawing.
