Born in Lyon, Boissieu first studied art in his native city before traveling to Paris where he became close friends with both Joseph Vernet and Greuze. De Boissieu quickly established a strong reputation for both his landscapes and figure studies. He was elected to the Academy of Lyon in 1780.
