| 341. Jean-Jacques Pradier (French/Swiss, 1790-1852)
"Atalanta, Fastening Her Sandal". Bronze figure of a nude woman. Lovely statue depicts a classical woman kneeling. Various objects of her toilette are scattered on the ground. Signed on oval base and stamped Susse F.G. Sculpture has golden reddish brown patination. This work was first exhibited at the Salon of 1850. Measures apprx 9"H x 7-3/4"L x 5-1/2"W. Provenance: Collection of J.A. Birch. Purchased at Phillips, London, 1984. The original is in in the collection of the Louvre. Born in Geneva, Pradier studied under the Neo-classical painter Ingres while in Paris. He he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, in 1827. He was a friend of the Romantic poets Alfred de Musset, Victor Hugo and Théophile Gautier. 1,500/2,500 Sold $1,092.50 back to catalog |
