Thomas Hart Benton was born on April 15, 1889 in Neosho, Missouri. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in Paris and New York, after which he settled in Kansas City Missouri. He is considered one of the foremost Regionalist Movement artists of his time, known for his murals, paintings, and prints that exemplify Midwestern life during the WPA era. His expressionistic style is evocative and unique.
