Copper plate engraving on paper, artist monogram in the plate lower left. Edges have been trimmed, into the image upper left and right margin. Image of Putti with shield, staff and helmut. paper apprx 3-1/4" x 3-7/8", overall in frame apprx15-1/8" x 11-1/4". Lucas van Leyden is considered to be the first great Renaissance master printmaker produced by the Netherlands. He was largely influenced by Albrecht Durer's works toward the end of the first decade of the sixteenth century. In 1521, Lucas and Durer met during Durer's trip to the Netherlands, winning the support of the new Regent for the renewal of his pension, the Emperor Maximilian I. van Leyden combined the Netherlands' traditional stylistic approach with Durer's inspiration and the Italian style of Jan Gossaert, a style that dominated Netherlandish printmaking for an entire century. 300/500 Sold $299.00 back to catalog |
