227. A Han Dynasty Funerary Model, 206 B.C.-220 A.D.
Excavated from a Han Dynasty tomb, this seven piece glazed earthenware model of a house includes towers, court yard and gate. By the Han dynasty, pottery was the most popular medium for grave goods and the manufacture of these spirit wares, called mingqi, became a full scale industry. Funerary wares of the Han dynasty provide a wonderful picture of everyday life. They included models of houses and granaries, farm animals and household goods along with figures of court officials and entertainers. Apprx 24"H x 32"W x 45"L.

228. Album of Twelve Ink Paintings
Each painting is apprx 10" x 10-1/2" and is laid on paper, which is then tipped into a thick card stock accordion book. Covers are wood with a paper label adhered. Artist stamps in red on each, three varying. First page is textual. Images of figures in a mountainous landscape, possible a monastery.

229. Hayashi Kodenji, Japanese, Meiji Period
Cloisonne vase with mirror black background with silver rims. Upper section with chidori flying up the tapered neck. The small blue birds are in gold wire and their symbol is associated with long life. The bulbous lower section is decorated with flowers and grasses executed in silver and gold wire. Greek key design around flared foot and rim. Gold wash on interior. Diamond artists mark inlaid in silver wire on bottom. Measures apprx 6-1/4"H x 3"W.

230. Vase attributed to Hayashi Koden Kodenji, Japanese, Meiji Period
Cloisonne vase with midnight blue ground and silver rims. Multi-colored chrysanthemum flowers, associated with autumn and endurance, and leaves are depicted next to a stream. Chidori fly over head. All decoration done in silver and gold wire. Vase assumes a squared shape with flared rim and foot. No signature to be found. Measure apprx 7-1/4"H x 2-3/4"W.

231. Hirado Blue and White Leaping Carp, Japanese, circa 19th Century
A well modeled ceramic carp is depicted leaping up against the powerful current of a waterfall. Waves are in underglaze blue, rocks in over-glaze and eyes in over-glaze yellow. Hollow fish has gaping mouth and upstanding pose. In Japan, the carp is a symbol of perseverance and stamina. Measures apprx 13-1/2"H x 1-1/4"W.

A large ceramic vase decorated with blue underglaze roundels containing depictions of a dragon with delicate clouds interspersed on a pure white ground. Around shoulders is a raised dart pattern. Interior bears banded evidence of thrown wheel technique. Measures apprx 13-1/2"H x 7-1/4"W.

233. Nabeshima Plate, Japanese, circa 1800
A blue and white plate decorated with underglaze blue flowers and rock work. Shallow dish sits raised on a round foot. Sides of the plate are decorated in the four cash design. Measures apprx 1-1/2"H x 4-1/2"W. Provenance: Sold at Christie's South Kensington Auction March 13, 1997; Lot# 444.

234. Carved Lacquer Inro Black Dragon on Red Waves, Japanese
Ascending dragon on front is carved in tsuikua and the stylized waves in tsuishu. The reverse is the same but the dragon is descending. Five compartments attached on purple chord. Interior compartments done in gold nashiji. Unsigned. An identical inro is shown in "Inro Handbook" by Raymond Bushell, p. 97. Measures apprx 4"H x 2-1/2"W.

The silver grounded inro is decorated with scenes of a lake with sail boats as well as a pine trees and a night moon in the togidashi technique. Risers are done in gold nashiji. Five compartments bound with silver chord. Measures apprx 2-3/4"H x 2-1/4"W.
