105. Michael Wolgemut (German, born c.1434-1519)
"Christ Before Pilate" an original woodcut by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for the Franciscan Stephan Fridolin's "Schatzbehalter oder schrein der waren reichtuemer des hails vnnd ewyger seligkeit" in Nuremberg, Germany. This woodcut is dated c.1491. Antique hand coloring, trimmed margins, paper apprx 9-7/8" x 6-7/8". Overall with frame apprx 20" x 16-1/4".

108. Salvator Rosa (Italian, 1615-1673)
"Démocrite en Méditation". Etching on rag paper, probably pulled toward the end of the 17th Century, ca. 1662, plate impression apprx. 18" x 10-7/8". Rosa was an Italian baroque painter, etcher, and poet of the Neapolitan school. In 1635 he went to Rome where he established his reputation with his painting "Prometheus" (Corsini Palace, Rome). He satirized the great Roman sculptor and architect Giovanni L. Bernini and moved to Florence in 1640 to avoid Berninis wrath and to work for the Medici family; painting, writing poems and satires, composing music, and acting. His works are in many major European museums; a self-portrait is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Offered in a French mat and period frame, overall apprx 25-1/2" x 17".

1) Captain Edward Jones, circa early 19th Century. Small pen and ink wash study of a exotic local. Scene features a gentleman leaning up against a pile of arranged rocks. From August 1848. Verso bears detailed notes about the location. Measures apprx 5-7/8"H x 8-7/8". Aspire Auctions have been cataloguing the sketched works on paper of Captain Edward Jones over the last year. From his European tour, he has offered us a view of the past by documenting villages, townspeople and landscapes. His detailed accounts of his surroundings and playful use of light and shadow lend something more than any amatuer illustrator could create. 2) Small engraving on paper of a woodland pond.
