Pigment and gold leaf on a gessoed panel. Image of St. Francis de Guzman in a classic representation of the Dominican saint holding a lily and in black and white garments. He always carried with him the gospel according to Matthew and the epistles of Paul, which is also depicted. He was canonized July 13th, 1234 by Pope Gregory IX. Panel apprx 9-3/4" x 8". Panel is fairly flat with only a slight bend in shape.

"Kerkinterieur". Oil on panel, framed. Wonderful interior scene of a church featuring dramatic marble baroque arches. A mother takes her son by the hand as they pass by the portico. Unsigned. Measures apprx 11"H x 9-1/4"W. Verso bears name tag from the Kunsthandle G.J. Nieuwenhuizen Segaar. Modern frame measures apprx 17-1/4"H x 15-1/4"W.

Country Landscape. Oil on beveled wood panel, framed. Small depiction features a rural scene with a cottage to the right, a seated figure to the left, and a flock of tiny sheep in the distance. Painting style is precise and detailed from studies done en plein air. This careful composition reflects the Romanitic ideal of the perfect view of greatly popular with travelers on "The Grand Tour". Signed P.N. 1820 on lower right corner. Measures apprx 5-7/8"H x 8"W. In gilt frame, entire item measures apprx 12-1/2"H x 14-5/8"W. Old collector tag on verso reads 360. On verso, in graphite, a deaccession number, H.E. f 2/1.5.

Pair of Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. John Webber. Square oil paintings on wooden boards, framed. Tiny formal portraits of the stately couple. The wife wears a bonnet with a blue ribbon and holds a flower. The husband sits against a draped background wearing a high white collar. Names of couple appear on versos of paper under protective paper backing, her name is Mary and date is 1799, as is John. Each painting measures apprx 3" square. In layered gold frame, entire item measures apprx 10-1/2" square.

"The Arch Angel Michael Torments the Soul of a Rich Man". Painting on panel with gold leaf, set into an architectural niche. Depiction of the Angel Michael holding the soul by the hair, lifting it to be placed into the bag of the standing demon, as demon states "It is Our Soul Because He Loves Wealth". Lower portion states, "God Remember Mihial Stoichko". The man's family looks on with anticipation with depiction of house in the background. Wonderful details throughout this painting such as the rendition of the armor and the hair and claws of the demon. Text in Old Slovenian language. Egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed wood panel. Panel apprx 25" x 19". Housed within a carved wood wall/shelf unit, which may be original, with traces of gold leaf. Overall apprx 34" x 24" x 8-1/2".

As painting style is loose, this painting was probably part of an architectural element, to be seen from afar. Composition is nice. Artist insignia in center on bottom. Miniature ivory paintings came into American and European vogue in the 1700's. The naturally translucent material was well suited to the luminous techniques of portrait painting. Comes with square Victorian frame accented with an applied metal thistle.

Acquired from Thomas Dunbar Fine Prints, Milwaukee in 1920. Documentation of this piece will accompany the sale of this painting. Portrait of Lerolle's wife and daughter by Bastien-Lepage is a major work in the collection of the Cleveland Museum and can be seen on the cover of the May/June issue of the Cleveland Museum of Arts Members Magazine.

"First Steps". Oil on canvas, signed lower right, 22" x 29", framed. Late afternoon or early morning sun highlight in a dramatic diagonal, lighting the 3/4 view of the mother's face and the baby's head. Note the expert handling of the light on the mother's face. A cat is to the right drinking milk with another sleeping on a chair to the left in the shadows. In a substantial, carved frame. Overall with frame apprx 33-1/4" x 40-1/2". Provenance: Ex Coll. John Gobey, Columbus, Ohio, by descent. Documentation of this piece will accompany the sale of this painting. With gallery tag from the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts inaugural exhibition, January 1931, on loan from the collection of Mr. John Gobey. Bernard de Hoog studied and worked in Amsterdam until 1899, then worked in Lauren from 1903 to 1924. He also lived in Bussum before moving to The Hague, where he died in 1943. This artist specialized in warm interior scenes in The Hague tradition.
