Figures of the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and the Christ Child, in carved wood and gesso. Delicate statues bear traces of original pigments including gilt. These sorts of figures were most often used in domestic altars as objects for personal devotions. Figures are mounted (with peg and hole system) onto a rough log slice for display purposes. Tallest figure of Mary measures apprx 9-1/4"H.

Depiction of Maria, Queen of Heaven, teaching or perhaps bestowing blessing up a young female saint, possibly St. Barbara or St. Bernadette due to their South American popularity. Carved in wood with traces of original pigment. The Madonna sits with her right foot on a globe and the pair appear to be surrounded by heavenly silver clouds. Measures apprx 12-1/2"H x 9-1/2"W.

A Khmer style bronze figure of a four-armed Ganesh dancing on one foot about a tall heptagonal pedestal upon which his vehicle, the weasel, is climbing. He wears tantric jewels and crown, in each hand he carries an attribute. Measures apprx 15"H. Provenance: Purchased from Jane Werner-Aye, New York City.

214. Tiffany Studios Bronze Candlestick for The Rowfant Club


After a model by James Lippitt Clark in the form of a standing Groundhog supporting a candle holder while sitting on an open book. The top of the base is inscribed "J.L. CLARK MODELLER ROWFANT CLUB CLEVELAND 1903". The base is stamped "TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK", and "OF/ONE HUNDRED/COPIES MADE THIS IS/ NO-47". Apprx 8-1/4"T. The making of candlesticks began in early 1894 when each member was charged to "appear at the annual convocation bearing a candlestick with his name attached thereto in autograph". The Rowfant Club is an exclusive Cleveland, Ohio, men’s bibliophilic organization started in 1892.

Gilt bronze paperweight of a dead bird. Small sculpture created through wax-resist casting method. Fragile bird has fine details such as curled claw and textured feathers. Signed Hinge on edge. Measures apprx 3"H x 4-3/4"W. Hingre was an animal sculptor of small mice, chickens and birds along with the occassional bull.

"Salvator Rosa". Spelter cast sculpture of the Italian Baroque era painter (1615-1673). Dashing figure is attired in full cape, feathered cap and high boots. He carries his sketch book in his left hand. Name of artist inscribed to front of base and A. Carrier inscribed in back at base. Measures apprx 20"H.

Carved wooded sculpture of a lion. Regal beast in traditional reclining position. Carving is well done, somewhat rough in technique. In dark wood. Measures apprx 8-1/2"H x 15-1/4"W. Signed on back of base. Krupka was born circa 1880 in the Rychnor area and came to the United States circa 1904 through Ellis Island. He died at the young age of 37 of consumption, leaving behind his children, all of whom were raised by friends of the family.

Studied in Prague, Vienna and Paris". Measures apprx 12"H x 7"W. Signed on back, J.K. Krupka was born circa 1880 in the Rychnor area and came to the United States circa 1904 through Ellis Island. He died at the young age of 37 of consumption, leaving behind his children, all of whom were raised by friends of the family.
