Lot includes two signed images from a personal scrap book. Both black and white image clippings of Amelia Earhart (American, 1897-1937) from the Christian Science Monitor from 1934. Fashion pictures depict the famous pilot in standing and seated positions. Both signed. Seated image has hand written date: Winter 1934. On verso of standing Earhart clipping is a news article from Friday, August 11, 1939 about Ruth Bryan Owen Rhode the ex-U.S. Ambassador to Denmark as well as a cartoon crediting her with starting the fad for over-the-shoulder handbag and her signature with hand written note "Night of Savage Hunt- Alderson W.Va".

Black and white photograph of Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) and his wife, Eleanor Truman (1884-1962) descending from an airplane. Both have signed the photograph. The picture is dated Christmas 1946. The pair were married in 1919. Truman became president in 1945 upon the death of FDR. He was elected on his own right and remained in the white house until 1953. He was the 33rd president of the United States. Photographic image measures apprx 10"H x 8"W.

527. Letter by Stefan Zweig (Austrian, 1881-1942)


Signed letter dated 1933, written by Stefan Zweig, thanking an interested person for having interest in his work. Paper apprx 10-1/2" x 8-1/4". Framed under glass, overall apprx 14-3/4" x 12". Provenance: The George Marek Collection, New York. Zweig gained first fame as a poet and translator, and then as a biographer, short-story writer, and novelist. His collections of autographs and manuscripts grew into a unique collection. The fall of Singapore in 1942 made Zweig fear that Nazism would eventually conquer the world. Disillusioned and isolated, Zweig committed suicide with his second wife, Charlotte E. Altmann, in PetrĂ³polis, near Rio de Janeiro on February 23, 1942.

528. Arthur Clarence Pillsbury (American 1870-1946)


"El Capitan, Yosemite", California, ca. 1920-25. Glass orotone, though not signed, it is undoubtedly his work. Framed in an arts-and-crafts frame with the original paper backing with a lable from Pillsbury's Pictures, Inc. Additional backing added later, the framer cut our the hand writen title and pasted it to the covering. Galss image apprx 6-3/8" x 4-1/4". Overall in frame apprx 7-1/8" x 4-3/4". Arthur Pillsbury specializing in glass orotones and set up a photographic studio in Yosemite Valley in 1907, when he bought out the firm of Hallet-Taylor, and remained there until 1928, when he sold out to the Yosemite Park and Curry Company. His photographs depict the many facets of Yosemite Valley as it was opening up to an increasing tourist trade at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Lot includes three black and white photographs, in sepia tones CDVs, described with hand written quotations found on versos: 1) "Clara Barton founder of Red Cross in W.S. and her staff in Civil War". Image features Clara sitting near door of a tent surrounded by 9 men in uniform. Measures apprx 5-1/4"H x 7-3/4"W. 2) Loading Civil War wounded on boats to Lake A** North". Near ariel view depicts camp tents on shore large boats including a steamboat. Photo measures apprx 5-7/8"H x 8"W. 3) "Soldier guarding a camp well Civil War". Image depicts a tent camp; in the foreground a solider can be seen sleeping on the structural supports of a fox hole. Measures apprx 6-1/8"H x 8-1/4"W. Lot also includes a small new paper clipping about the life of Clara Barton.

Lot of 30 glass plate negatives and their printed photographs of pre-War Time Japan. Images include a Japanese baseball team, army generals, trench scenes, airplanes, and conference with Nazi, Japanese, and Malta flags. Among the most striking images are an arial view of bombs falling and a woman walking her dog, both in gas masks. Because of important subject matter and skill with composition and exposure, plates were possibly for journalistic or media means. Plates measure apprx 3-1/4"H x 4-1/4"W

533. The Dying Lion of Lucern


Black and white image of the dying Lion of Lucern. The statue is located in Lucerne, Switzerland carved out of the living rock. This monument commemorates the Swiss Guards who died at the Storming of the Tuileries on August 10, 1792. The monument was commissioned in 1821 after a design by Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Latin inscription reads "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" : "To the Loyalty and Courage of the Swiss." Image measures apprx 14"H x 20-1/2"W. In dark wood frame, entire item measures apprx 22"H x 26-1/2"W.

Postcard booklet cover reads "Greetings from the Happy Sunny South" with a colored photo reproduction of "Romeo and Juliet in the Cotton Filed". Booklet is post marked New Orleans, Feb 15, 1928, and addressed to Win Hoff Carey, Ohio, with a 2 cent stamp. 32 pages of tinted black and white photo reproductions with images of Southern sharecroppers and their families with captions such as "A Watermelon Feast", "A Good Darkey" and "Down Where the Cotton Blossoms Grow". Made by Curt Telch & Co. Chicago, Ill. Back cover states "This folder contains a set of typical southern darky scenes, reproduced from actual photographs, showing the care-free and happy life of the negro down in Dixie..." Measures apprx 4-1/4"H x 6"W.
