| 515. William Blake's Designs for Gray's Poems reproduced full-size in monochrome or colour from the unique copy belonging to His Grace the Duke of Hamilton
London. Humphrey Milford/Oxford University Press 1922. Folio. pp. 22. 117 plates, including 6 in colour on rectos only. Publisher's cloth, limited to 650 copies, gilt embossed cover and spine. These works, probably produced in 1800, demonstrate that for Blake there was a strong Romantic streak to be found in Gray's poems, a streak that Blake has brought to the fore. This "original copy" was found among Flaxman's papers after his death, was auctioned in 1828, eventually sold to William Beckford, was transferred to Hamilton Palace upon the marriage of Beckford's daughter to the tenth Duke, and remained there until its discovery in a portfolio of prints. 100/200 Sold $80.50 back to catalog |
