7. Rare Copper Ornament, Mississippi period, circa 1200-1500 A.D.

Copper repousse plaque in the form of a falcon-man with a serpent motif on the chest. Comprised of four copper sections forming falcon with a fifth section for copper serpent on chest. The exterior, lower portion is perforated with nine small holes for attachment. Thought to be one of the very few copper repousse plaques remaining in private hands. Apprx 11-3/16" x 2-3/4" at shoulder. Ex-collection of Ralph olson, Chicago, IL. This was excavated in 1970 at Scott's bluff by Mr. Matthis and Mr. Rowlett, both from Arkansas. It was an adult extended burial. The copper eagle extended from the back of the skull and was rounded some over the top of the head.
