| 276. Pair of Massive Jade Foo Dogs, Chinese, early 19th Century
Matching statues carved of Jadeite, with stands. One Foo Dog is shown with paw on a sphere; the other has a paw on a Foo baby. These figures stand guard over the entrance to Buddhist temples and tombs; thus discouraging evil spirits and wrong doers from entering, and maintaining peace and tranquility within the sanctuary. The fearsome pair sit with heads tilted inward. Each creatures sits on a Jadeite base as well as a rectangular wooden stand.
