| 429. Pair of Piecrust Quimper Plates, French, circa 1890
Pair of similar plates feature a lovely hand painted scene of courting peasants surrounded by floral elements. Rims are wavy and painted in blue with a sage-green underside. Central vignettes are signed HR Quimper on bottom left and also on bottoms with designer number 8. Plates measure apprx 8"D. The town of Quimper is located in northwestern France in the province of Brittany, and has been a pottery town since the days when the area was part of the Roman Empire. It was situated in close, convenient proximity to four rivers: the riverbanks provided clay as well as a mode of transportation for the finished product, abundant nearby forests meant plenty of fuel for the kilns. 100/150 Sold $149.50 back to catalog |
