20. Patrick Nasmyth (British, 1787-1831)

Country Landscape. Oil on beveled wood panel, framed. Small depiction features a rural scene with a cottage to the right, a seated figure to the left, and a flock of tiny sheep in the distance. Painting style is precise and detailed from studies done en plein air. This careful composition reflects the Romanitic ideal of the perfect view of greatly popular with travelers on "The Grand Tour". Signed P.N. 1820 on lower right corner. Measures apprx 5-7/8"H x 8"W. In gilt frame, entire item measures apprx 12-1/2"H x 14-5/8"W. Old collector tag on verso reads 360. On verso, in graphite, a deaccession number, H.E. f 2/1.5.

The English School of Romantic Landscape painters featured such notables as John Constable (1776-1837) and John Mallord William Turner Turner (1775-1851). Their painting style was much influenced by the French School of 17th Century classical landscape painters, such as Claude Lorraine (1600-1682) (who in turn were directly inspired by the Italian country side and the Renaissance painters).
