140. Robert Van Vorst Sewell (American, 1860-1924)

The Procession of the Bacchantes. Gouache on paper, framed under glass. Lovely Pre-Raphaelite image of a parade of eight dancing nymphs. The women wear diaphanous tunics and play musical instruments such as the lyre and pipes. Signed on bottom right. Believed to be dated circa 1903. Possibly a study for a larger work. Measures apprx 17-1/2"H x 46"H. In wood frame, entire item measures apprx 20-1/2"H x 49"W.

Sewell was born in New York City in 1860. He studied in Paris with Lefevre and Boulanger.
